NOTE: These die back fast but new submersed leaves grow even faster. Check out the 2nd picture for how it will look in your tank, and also how it might look when it ships since I start converting it when I bring them in.
Marsilea crenata is a charming foreground plant known for its small, clover-like leaves and low-growing habit. Often compared to a miniature aquatic clover, this versatile plant can gradually spread across the substrate to create a natural green carpet. Its compact size and relatively easy care make it an excellent choice for nano tanks, shrimp tanks, and larger planted aquascapes.

Care Tips
Care Tips
Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is sufficient; stronger lighting can encourage more compact, low-growing growth
CO₂ & Fertilization: CO₂ is not required but can encourage faster, denser growth; liquid fertilizer, root tabs or a nutrient-rich substrate can help promote healthy growth
Temperature: Thrives in 68–82°F (20–28°C)
Water Conditions: Adaptable to a wide range of aquarium conditions, generally preferring slightly acidic to neutral water
Planting & Growth: Separate into small portions and plant throughout the foreground; new runners will gradually spread into surrounding areas
Maintenance: Trim or thin established growth as needed to maintain the desired shape and encourage a neat carpet

Marsilea crenata is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a compact, natural-looking foreground plant without the demanding care of many traditional carpeting species. Its tiny clover-like leaves and spreading growth create a lush, peaceful look that works beautifully in both shrimp tanks and planted aquascapes.
I didn't know anything about this plant, but it looked neat and different, so I decided to try it out. It grows in long chains with roots and short stems at nodes, and the average height of the chains is about 2 inches tall right now. Some of the more mature leaves/chains are an inch or two taller than this, but most of the mature growth died back before it got to me. I'm not worried though, because the younger parts of the plant look healthy and strong and it has been looking good over the past two weeks or so. It takes a bit for the new leaves to get their clover shape, but I can see them changing as they mature. It should turn into a great carpet once it gets more established.
